APARTMENT
Vertical and horizontal, square and circle. In an apartment restructured in a geometric and minimalistic way, one can experience a sense of beauty mixed with strangeness. The black sphere in the video symbolizes anxiety, while the chair, a tool for sitting, represents people, allowing us to project ourselves and others onto it. There is no definitive interpretation of the video, so we hope you find what sensations you feel and interpret it in your own way, from your perspective.
Concept & Background
You might have seen images like this at least once. Familiar spaces that evoke discomfort and fear – this is the liminal space, with the "backroom" being a prime example. The word "liminal" is derived from the Latin "limen," meaning "threshold" or "boundary." Liminal spaces are places with such boundary-like characteristics, often referring to everyday but empty public spaces like deserted shopping malls, swimming pools, hotels, subways, and supermarkets. In liminal space imagery, one can feel anxiety, emptiness, disconnection, fear, strangeness, and unfamiliarity.
We wanted to express the emotions felt in these liminal spaces through video and chose a Korean apartment as the background. The apartment, which is also the title of this video, is the most common type of housing in Korea. Here are some features commonly seen in Korean apartments:
